a system for indicating locations on the Earth\'s surface based on ground distances. Locations are designated in terms of distances in metres east of the centre of a UTM zone and north (or south) of the equator. The earth is divided into sixty zones, each 6 degrees of longitude wide. Each zone is projected onto a Transverse Mercator projection. UTM zone 1 extends from 180° to 174°W. Each zone extends from 80°S latitude to 84°N. Abbreviated as UTM
